Rockies swept by Padres, nine-game homestand on tap

The Rockies-Padres series mercifully came to a close for Colorado, as San Diego finished off a three-game sweep with a 5-3 win.

Colorado lost in walk-off fashion Monday (1-0) and got routed Tuesday (14-5) before dropping another close game to finish out the series Wednesday.

The Rockies are off today before starting a nine-game homestand Friday, with a three game series against the Angels. After that Colorado has a short two-game series vs. Oakland and then a four-game set vs. the Dodgers.

The homestand is the last one of the season for Colorado. After the series finale on Sunday, Sept. 20 vs. L.A. the Rockies play four games each vs. the Giants and Diamondbacks on the road to finish the year.

Chances for Rocktober?

Despite sitting at 20-23, the Rockies still have a legitimate chances at making the playoffs this season, assuming they can start winning at home. Colorado is 9-12 at Coors, including going 4-10 over the past 14 games there.

As it stands heading into Thursday’s games, the Rockies (20-23, .465) trail the Giants (23-21, .523) and Marlins (19-19, .500) for one of the final two playoffs berths.

Remember, this season, due to games being canceled over COVID-19 outbreaks, there’s a chance not all teams will play a full 60-game season. In that case winning percentage will determine who gets in.

No fans, no fun for Nolan

The Denver Post’s Patrick Saunders wrote about how Rockies third baseman Nolan Arenado might miss having fans at games more than anyone else.

“It’s nice to have that energy, that little pick me up. Sometimes it’s hard to find, within yourself, when you are going day-to-day. So it’s fun to play in good environments because that gets you going.”

Arenado said before Wednesday’s game.

Dahl returns

One bright spot Wednesday was the return of outfielder David Dahl for Colorado. Dahl had been on the 10-day IL due to lower back soreness and last played in a game on Aug. 17.

He didn’t play Wednesday, but manager Bud Black is hoping Dahl is able to contribute down the stretch for the Rockies.

“It looks as though he’s healthy, he’s ready to go, he’s in a good frame of mind. We’ll try to get him in there as we get to the weekend and as we get to this homestand. But we need David to be ready.”

Black said.

Padres hammer Rockies, González 14-5

A night after getting shutout by San Diego things started off well for Colorado. Nolan Arenado hit a three-run homer, his first on the road this season, in the top of the first to give the Rockies a 3-0 lead, then the bottom of the first happened.

Colorado starter Chi Chi González walked three and hit a batter while recording just one out before he was removed for José Mujica who came on for his major league debut. It was not one he’ll want to remember. The first batter he faced, Wil Myers, hit a grand slam. When the inning ended Colorado trailed 5-3.

By the time the second inning was over the Padres’ lead had ballooned to 10-3. And when all was said and done San Diego rolled to a 14-5 win on Tuesday night in San Diego.

“So, 3-0, especially after last night, when only one run was scored … and we jump right out against a very good pitcher. We gave Chi Chi an opportunity to go down there and have a shutdown innings. Then things got away from Chi Chi.”

Rockies manager Bud Black said after Tuesday’s loss.

Season finale vs. Padres

Tonight marks not only the final game of the three-game series between Colorado and San Diego, but their final meeting of the season unless they play each other in the playoffs.

Righty Antonio Senzatela (3-1, 3.33 ERA) will get the start for the Rockies against righty Zach Davies (6-2, 2.23 ERA) for the Padres.

Padres walk off Rockies 1-0 Monday night

Kyle Freeland threw six shutout innings, but it wasn’t enough as the Padres won 1-0 on Jurickson Profar’s walk-off double in the ninth inning Monday night in San Diego. With the loss Colorado is now 20-21 with 19 games left in the season.

As it currently stand the Rockies are on the outside of the playoff race, trailing both the Giants and Marlins, who are both .500.

Freeland returns to form

Freeland, still looking to prove his struggles in 2019 were a one off, was facing San Diego for the third time in the past month and was coming off back-to-back rough starts.

After beginning the season 2-1 with a 2.87 ERA in his first six starts he struggled in his last two outings earning two no decisions despite an ERA of 11.37. As for Monday, Freeland changed up his approach against San Diego.

“It was a different plan of attack. It was the third time I had faced them in the last (few) weeks. In my second start against them, they sort of sat soft on me and I could see that. So we changed up the game plan and got them back off balance throwing with hard action (inside) to get them off the soft stuff away.”

Freeland said.

Rockies manager Bud Black likes what he’s seeing from the Colorado lefty.

“Kyle has that capability to do some things, to change his game, which I think is the mark of a developing young pitcher.”

Black said after the loss.

Extra bases

The Rockies managed seven hits in the game, including two each from Trevor Story and Nolan Arenado.

  • Padres starer Dinelson Lamet threw 7 2/3 shutout innings with 11 strikeouts. It was the deepest he’s pitched in a MLB game in his career.
  • The two teams square off again tonight at 7:10 p.m. (AT&T SportsNet) with Chi Chi González (0-0, 5.00 ERA) starting for Colorado against Mike Clevinger (1-2, 3.14 ERA) going for San Diego. González is taking the place of injured starter Jon Gray, while Clevinger is making his second starter since the Padres traded for the righty.
  • Colorado signed former All-Star reliever AJ Ramos and assigned him to the team’s alternate training camp.
  • TheAthletic.com’s Marc Carig took a stab at naming franchise icons for all 30 MLB teams. Not surprisingly Todd Helton was the choice for Colorado.

Rockies blanked 6-0, add OF Pillar via trade

On a day when the Rockies traded for Boston outfielder Kevin Pillar Colorado’s bats were silent as San Diego blanked the Rockies 6-0 at Coors Field to take the four-game series and drop Colorado a game below .5oo (17-18).

Rockies starter Germán Márquez wasn’t sharp, but with Colorado’s offense MIA it didn’t really matter. Márquez labored through six innings allowing five runs on eight hits while striking out seven.

“His stuff is fine, he’s just not hitting spots. I’m not worried about the arm. Right now it’s about location. He’s not making enough good pitches at the most critical times.”

Rockies manager Bud Black said of Márquez after the game.

Márquez has now lost a career-worst four decisions in a row and is 2-5 with a 4.88 ERA on the season. During his past five starts he’s 0-4 with a 6.83 ERA.

“My fastball location wasn’t good today,. I missed with a couple of pitches but I have to hang in there and keep working.”

Márquez said.

Offensive woes

On the offensive side of things third baseman Nolan Arenado went 1-for-4 to extend his hitting streak to seven games, but that’s about the only good news for the Rockies. Colorado finished the game with seven hits, all singles, save for a double by Daniel Murphy.

When asked after the game if he thinks the offense can get things turned around Arenado had this to say:

“I believe so. We just haven’t been consistent at all. That’s kind of our thing this year. We just haven’t been consistent throughout the lineup, and you see the Padres over there and they’re on fire — all the hitters over there.”

Rockies add OF Pillar

Before the game the Rockies traded for Pillar from the Red Sox in hopes that he can help offensively as well as defensively. But the fact is Pillar likely will help more patrolling the outfield, than he will at the plate.

Black said he expects Pillar to play center field for the Rockies and bat in the lower half of the lineup, which has been another sore spot for the Rockies.

Another reason Colorado acquire Pillar is due to the fact David Dahl remains on the IL and it’s not clear when he will return. The Rockies will trade either a player to be named or cash considerations, as well as international amateur signing bonus pool space for Pillar.

Rodgers goes back on injured list

On Monday the Rockies also placed infielder Brendan Rodgers on the 10-day IL with a right shoulder strain. Colorado is hopeful the injury is minor.

Since being recalled from alternative camp on Aug. 19 Rodgers has played in seven games hitting 0.95 (2-for-21) with a double and two RBI.

Extra bases

The Rockies welcome in the Giants for a quick two-game series starting tonight (6:40 p.m., AT&T SportsNet). Colorado righty Jon Gray (2-3, 5.45 ERA) will take the mound for the Rockies, while the Giants have yet to name a starter for the game.

  • MLB.com ranked all the trades made on Monday. The Rockies acquisition of Pillar ranked seventh overall. Unfortunately for Rockies fans, the Padres trade for Cleveland’s Mike Clevinger ranked No. 1.

Rockies fall again, but trade for O’s reliever Givens

On Sunday the Rockies got hammered by the Padres 13-2 in the third game of the teams’ four-game series at Coors Field. Before the game Colorado made what could prove to be a fairly major move by trading for Baltimore right-handed reliever Mychal Givens.

Givens, who primarily uses a fastball that sits in the upper 90s and a hard slider, has been stellar as a setup man for the Orioles this season. He currently sports a 1.38 ERA with 19 strikeouts in 13 innings of work.

“He’s a proven big league relief pitcher who will definitely help us. We’re excited to have him. I know the guys in the clubhouse were excited to see the name. He’s a good one. We’ll use him in the back end of the game to help us win. He’s done that in the past.”

Rockies manager Bud Black said of Givens.

Whether Givens steps into the Rockies’ closer role remains to be seen, but Colorado clearly needs help in its bullpen. Wade Davis (shoulder strain) and Scott Oberg (blood clots) were projected to be Colorado’s closer and setup man to start the season and both are on the IL, with Oberg being out for the season.

The rest of Rockies pen has been fairly shaky aside from the surprise emergence of Daniel Bard.

“This isn’t the first time that we’ve actually asked on Mychal Givens over the past few years. What he has done in the past fits into our later innings. There’s a lot of experience there, a lot of production.

Rockies general manager Jeff Bridich said of acquiring Givens.

As for whether Colorado will make any more moves before today’s trade deadline Bridich had this to say:

“We certainly have other conversations that are somewhat ongoing. We may or may not be done, I’m not sure. There’s typically a lot of action on the last day of the Deadline.”

Sunday, not fun-day for Rockies

As for the game on Sunday, things started poorly and didn’t get any better for the Rockies. Starting pitcher Ryan Castellani gave up five runnings in just two innings of work and all four relievers who followed gave up at least one run in the loss to San Diego.

As for Colorado’s offense the only real positive came from Nolan Arenado going 2-for-3 with a double and run scored in the loss. Arenado’s average is up to .268 as he continues to try and work his way out of a season-long slump.

Series finale tonight

The Rockies and Padres finish off their four-game series at Coors Field tonight on a game that will be televised on ESPN, only available out-of-market unfortunately, and AT&T Sports Net. Germán Márquez (2-4, 4.50 ERA) will get the start for the Rockies against San Diego’s Garrett Richards (1-2, 5.17 ERA).

Padres continue to load up

On Monday morning the Padres traded for Cleveland’s Mike Clevinger in a blockbuster deal. The trade is the fifth the Padres have made since Saturday.

Along with Clevinger, San Diego has acquired first baseman Mitch Moreland, catchers Austin Nola and Jason Castro, and closer Trevor Rosenthal.

While it would seem like the Padres are going all-in on this season, the fact is a lot of the players they’ve acquired are under contract for multiple season, so they likely will help them in the coming years as well.

Extra bases

TheAthltic.com’s Nike Groke wrote about why the Rockies acquired Givens. And within the piece there was a telling quote from Arenado that I found fairly telling of the state of the team right now.

“Urgency is at an all-time high. We have to find a way to win series and find a way to sneak in.”

Arenado said.

It’s always hard to tell tone, but it sounds almost desperate from the Rockies star.
