Rockies-Diamondbacks postpone Thursday’s game

The Colorado Rockies and Arizona Diamondbacks joined a growing list of professional sports teams as they postponed their scheduled game on Thursday.

The Rockies released the following statement via Twitter:

The Diamondbacks quickly responding with a tweet of their own supporting the Rockies:

How the movement started

The movement began yesterday when the Milwaukee Bucks led a protest that resulted in the three NBA games scheduled for Wednesday to be postponed.

Other sports followed suit to various degrees on Wednesday. All three WNBA games were postponed. Three MLB games were postponed, while Rockies outfielder Matt Kemp choose to sit out the Rockies game vs. the Diamondbacks. And in the MLS five of the six scheduled matches were postponed. The one match that did take place between Orlando and Nashville started before players around the league were able to formalize a plan for the remaining games Wednesday.

The NBA has since postponed all Thursday games, which includes Game 6 of the Nuggets-Jazz series which was scheduled to tipoff later this afternoon.

According to TheAthletic.com report Nick Groke, Trevor Story had this say about his team’s decision to play on Wednesday night, and then not to on Thursday.

We had a chance to stand up with our guy last night and we didn’t do it.”

Story said.

Rockies reporter Jenny Cavnar then tweeted that Kemp had this to say about the Rockies decision to play on Wednesday:

“I had a good conversation with lots of the guys yesterday, everything happened so fast with the NBA and other teams in baseball sitting out. I don’t think they realized at the time. I had a deep conversation with Trevor today and he poured his heart out to me.”

Players to donate game checks

According to USA Today Major League Baseball reporter Bob Nightengale Rockies and Diamondbacks players plan to donate their game checks from Thursday to organizations that are fighting for social justice.

Rockies hold on for 8-7 win over D-backs

Jon Gray pitched six innings and allowed just one run, Charlie Blackmon hammered a grand slam to put Colorado ahead 8-1 in the eighth inning and then the Rockies held on for dear life as Arizona’s rally fell just short as Colorado prevailed 8-7 on Wednesday night.

Gray looked the best he has all season as his fastball velocity was more than a mile an hour above his season average.

“To me, that’s the best stuff that Jon has had all year. I saw the velocity tick up. I saw some 95s, a bunch of 96s, I think I might have seen 97, which we haven’t seen this year. So that’s a good sign for Jon.”

Rockies manager Bud Black said of Gray’s performance after the game.

With the win, the third straight one-run victory over Arizona, Colorado (16-15) moves back over .500 on the season.

Harrowing ninth inning

After Sam Hilliard homered and Blackmon added his grand slam later in the eighth inning it appeared the Rockies would cruise to the win. Going to the bottom of the eighth the Diamondbacks trailed 8-1. And after scoring just two runs in the eighth the victory still seemed well in hand.

Tyler Kinley started the ninth for Colorado and allowed a hit and walk before being replaced. Jairo Díaz came in next and did record two outs, but also allowed two hits and a walk. The most dangerous of which was a two-run single by Christian Walker that hit the left-field wall, just a foot or two shy of being a walk-off grand slam for Arizona.

At last Jeff Hoffman came on for the Rockies and struck out Nick Ahmed to end it and pick up his first major league save.

Kemp sits out in protest of racial injustice

Colorado outfielder Matt Kemp joined a number of teams and players who choose not to play on Wednesday night in protest of police shootings of Black people in America and racial injustice as a whole in our country.

Kemp announced his decision via Instagram:

All three NBA playoff games scheduled for Wednesday were postponed, as were five MLS games, three MLB games and all three WNBA games.

According to The Denver Post Rockies players had conversations in the clubhouse about postponing Wednesday’s game, but never had a formal meeting on the matter.

Rockies reach halfway mark at 15-15 after win

Nolan Arenado picked up his first extra base hits on the road this season and Daniel Bard made things exciting in the ninth as the Rockies held on to bead the Diamondbacks 5-4 on Tuesday night in Arizona. Colorado is now 15-15 at the halfway point of this truncated MLB season.

Arenado has struggled for seemingly most of the season so far, but his RBI double to score Trevor Story in the seventh inning gave the Rockies the lead 4-3 lead and his run scored later in the inning on a passed ball proved the difference in the game. His RBI double in the first inning, also scoring Story, was his first extra base hit of the season away from Coors Field.

After the game the Rockies third baseman talked about how bizarre it feels to already be entering the second half of the season.

“It’s weird being at the end already. I think that’s something none of us are used to. It feels like we just started, and now we’re almost done. That’s the disappointing part about playing a 60-game season, but at the same time, it’s better than nothing, so we’re just happy to be back out here and trying to get in that playoff.”

Arenado said.

Pitching dicey, but gets the job done

Rockies right Germán Márquez was not sharp for his second straight start as he labored to get through five innings while allowing six hits, three walks and striking out five. But when he left the score was tied 3-3.

“My fastball didn’t have its good command, but I battled. I gave us a chance to win.”

Márquez said after Colorado’s 5-4 win.

Colorado manager Bud Black could tell that his No. 1 starter didn’t have his A stuff on Tuesday.

“With Germán, it was like his last start, he looked just a little bit uncomfortable. He just couldn’t get in a rhythm of repeating pitches, repeating his delivery. And some balls were elevated up in the strike zone.”

Black said.

In the ninth inning Bard came on with the Rockies leading 5-3 and he picked up his third save of the season and second in as many nights, but the road to getting there was much more harrowing.

Bard walked Kole Calhoun to lead off the inning and had two outs before things got interesting. David Peralta then singled to bring Arizona to within one. Bard next hit Christian Walker with a pitch, then walked Eduardo Escobar to load the bases.

Out came pitching coach Steve Foster to check on Bard, who proceeded to strike out Nick Ahmed on three straight pitches to end the game.
