Nuggets stun Clippers, advance to West finals

For the past 26 years the biggest win in Nuggets’ franchise history was when Denver knocked off the Seattle SuperSonics in the first round of the 1994 NBA playoffs and Dikembe Mutombo was seen on the floor clutching the ball over his head afterward. It’s safe to say there’s a new No. 1 in town after Denver shocked the Clippers and the basketball world with a 104-89 win Tuesday night.

Denver gets a couple days off before the start of the Western Conference Finals on Friday (7 p.m., TNT) vs. the top-seeded L.A. Lakers.

As for Tuesday, the Nuggets set numerous records with the win, here’s a look at some of them:

  • Denver became the first team ever to come back from 3-1 deficits twice in the same postseason.
  • Became the first team ever to rally from double-digit deficits in three straight games when facing elimination.
  • Tied the record for most wins when facing elimination in one postseason with six. The team they tied? The 1994 Nuggets.
  • Jamal Murray became the first player in history to score 40 points or more in three elimination games in the same postseason after scoring 40 on Tuesday.
  • Nikola Jokić became the first player to record a triple-double in the first three quarters of a Game 7. Jokić finished with 16 points, 22 rebounds and 13 assists.
He’s also now one of just three players to have multiple Game 7 triple doubles, joining Russell Westbrook and Rajon Rondo.

That’s what they said

After the win Murray pushed back against all the people who’ve been doubting the Nuggets, saying:

“You got (Shaquille O’Neal), you got Charles (Barkley), I think Zach LoweStephen A. (Smith), all y’all better start giving this team some damn respect. Because we put in the work. We shouldn’t have been down 3-1, but to come back down 3-1 against the Clippers is a big achievement, so it’s fun just to change that narrative.”

Jokić echoed much the same tone, saying:

“Nobody wants us here. Nobody thinks we can do something. We proved ourselves and proved everybody we can do something. … We are just not accepting that somebody’s better than us.”

As for the game itself Murray credited the Nuggets ability to outwork L.A. as the reason for the historic win.

“We’ve got a lot of energy, and we brought it and they didn’t match that. They got who they got. They’ve got a talented squad. They’ve got Doc (Rivers), too. They’ve got assistant coaches who are about to be head coaches. We know what they have, we just outworked them a little bit with our young legs.”

As for Nuggets head coach Michael Malone, he couldn’t be more proud of his players.

“I think this is our sixth straight elimination game. Seventy-one days in the bubble and just to stay together, that commitment, that toughness is — you don’t see that around very often. That speaks to the guys in the locker room and how much they love each other. Just an amazing feeling. …
“So proud. All the guys, never got down, believed in each other. Believed in themselves. In light of all the noise outside this series that we had no chance. We have people guaranteeing it. We found a way to beat a really good team three times. I’ve run out of things to say.”

With one L.A. team down, there’s another one waiting for Denver in the form of the L.A. Lakers led by LeBron James. When asked if he’s worried about the upcoming series, Jokić responded:

“They gotta worry about us, too.”

Broncos surrender late lead in 16-14 loss to Titans

In an ending that was eerily reminiscent of so many losses last season, the Broncos watched the Titans drive 83 yards on 12 plays, capped off by Stephen Gostkowski’s 25-yard field goal, as Tennessee rallied to beat Denver 16-14 in the season opener on Monday Night Football at Empower Field.

When it was over, it added up to an ugly debut for the Broncos in Vic Fangio’s second season at the helm that included:

  • Injuries to running back Philip Lindsay (toe) and cornerback A.J. Bouye (shoulder).
  • A lost fumble by running back Melvin Gordon and two fumbled snaps by quarterback Drew Lock, though Denver did recover both of those.
  • Two key drops by rookie receiver Jerry Jeudy.
  • A failed fourth-and-goal play by the offense that resulted in Denver coming away with zero points despite driving down to the Tennessee 1-yard line.
  • The defense’s inability to stop a late drive and surrender the lead.
  • Fangio’s poor clock management which left the Broncos with just 17 seconds when they got the ball back trailing 16-14. They finished the game with two timeouts remaining … maybe Fangio thinks they carry over to next week.

Highlights: Titans 16, Broncos 14

What they had to say

Denver safety Justin Simmons had this to say of the Broncos defense failing to stop the Titans when it mattered most:

“The drives prior, we did a good job keeping them (backed up and punting), and they had the ball back down there again and as a defense, you have to be able to keep them down there. We got to be better.”

On the failed fourth-and-goal play Lock shoveled the ball to tight end Jake Butt who was then stopped short of the end zone. Did Fangio regret the decision to forgo the three points in a game Denver lost by two? He said this afterward:

“I had no second thoughts there.”

Apparently not.

As for Fangio’s decision not to use his timeouts during the Titans’ final drive, he said part of it was due to the fact that Gostkowski had missed three field goals and an extra point so far in the game.

“It was two-fold. One, their field goal kicker obviously (had) been having his problems so I didn’t want to extend the drive where they could get closer.
Number two, we would have used a time out, but we got the running back out of bounds. We would have used a second time out, but they threw an incompletion which would have given us one when we got the ball back so that was part of the thinking there.”

Fangio said.

As it turned out the game-winning field goal was a 25-yarder, so not well played in saving them to prevent Tennessee from getting closer. And Fangio’s logic that he was ready to use them, but the situation didn’t allow him to makes no sense. He literally said he didn’t want to call any, so which is it?

Extra points

  • TheDNVR.com’s Zac Stevens did a great job recapping and showing how poor Fangio’s clock management at the end of the game was.
  • Andrew Mason at DNVR detailed all the other ways Denver blew it vs. Tennessee.
  • The Denver Post’s Mark Kiszla too ripped Fangio’s late-game abilities and also wondered if 75,000 fans could have helped the Broncos.
  • Kyle Newman of The Post detailed Jeudy’s first night in the NFL. Jeudy finished with four catches for 56 yards, but also had two key drops.
  • My final thoughts: It’s just one of 16 games, but the Broncos looked just like they did last year: Unable to score on offense and a solid defense that crumbles at the end. Then you have Gordon fumbling, which was a major concern when Denver signed him this offseason. And add in injuries to Lindsay and Bouye coupled with upcoming games against Pittsburgh and Tampa Bay and it feels like this season could be sunk before the calendar hits October.

Broncos-Titans betting guide and offers

The Broncos 2020 season finally begins tonight as Denver welcomes in Tennessee to Empower Field in the second game of ESPN’s Monday Night Football doubleheader with kickoff scheduled for 8:20 p.m.

Tennessee favored

At DraftKings Sportsbook Denver is listed at +3, in what was a pick ’em game before news of Von Miller’s injury broke. For whatever it’s worth the Broncos are 18-2 in their past 20 home openers, but all those games had fans in the stands and came after a full-slate of preseason games.

The odds makers also are expecting a low-scoring game with the over/under listed at 41. Looking at the first 14 games of the NFL season the overs have hit nine times, it’s obviously a small sample size, but it just feels like 41 is a little too low, even in what could be a defensive contest.

Props worth considering

Over at FanDuel Sportsbook you’re able to place single-game parlays on the Broncos-Titans game, while some sportsbooks don’t allow similar wagers to be combined. Here’s a look at a couple options I think are worth the gamble tonight.

A $10 parlay on Titans running back Derrick Henry and Broncos running back Philip Lindsay along with receiver Jerry Jeudy to all score touchdowns in the game will win you $304. Lindsay and Jeudy are longer shots to get in the end zone, but at odds of +3045 it’s a risk worth taking.

The other bet I really like at FanDuel simply because of the odds is picking Tennessee to win, the Broncos to cover and the over to hit. At odds of +4228 a $10 bet will win you $422. For what it’s worth all it would take is a final score in the low 20s for both teams with the Titans winning by one or two points.

Special offers

There’s a slew of special offers out there on tonight’s game. We’ve already mentioned FanDuel’s single-game parlays bets that are available, here’s a couple more that are worth a look.

DraftKings is offering First TD Insurance, meaning if you bet on who will score the game’s first touchdown you’ll get your money back as long as your pick scores a TD at any point in the game. Your money will be refunded in the form of a free bet up to $20.

If you want to take a Bronco here I would suggest Lindsay, Jeudy or tight end Noah Fant. All three are +1200, so it’s a great payoff if they score first, but you also have a decent chance to get your money back with a TD later in the game.

The final two offers are for new customers at BetMGM and William Hill sportsbooks.

At BetMGM all you need to do is signup, make a deposit and place a moneyline bet on the Broncos-Titans game, if either team scores a TD you’ll receive $100 in free bets.

At William Hill just sign up, make a deposit and place at least a $5 moneyline or point spread bet on the game. If the team you picked wins or loses by less than 50 points you’ll win a $101 free bet.

Rockies fall as bullpen, offense again stumble

Starting pitcher Ryan Castellani struggled through 5 1/3 innings Sunday, but somehow allowed only one unearned run and left with the Rockies leading 3-1. Unfortunately Colorado wouldn’t score again, while the Angels rallied for a 5-3 victory at Coors Field.

Castellani allowed just one hit, but walked six and hit a batter over the course of 96 pitches. In all the Rockies walked 10 batters as they lost the three-game series against Los Angeles.

Had the offense managed more than three runs the bullpen’s inability to keep the Angels bats in checked might not have mattered. Instead Colorado is now 21-25 on the season and dropping further behind the Giants (23-24) in the race for the final Wild Card playoff spot.

“We’ve talked about it all season. We need the big hit with runners in scoring position. We’ve got to break through, keep the line moving and string hits together, more than just a couple — and (we) can’t rely on one grand slam.”

Rockies manager Bud Black said of his offense’s inability to come through when it mattered most on Sunday.

Pujols makes history

On the other side of the diamond Sunday was one of the all-time greats adding another achievement to list of accomplishments. Albert Pujols hit his 660th career home run, tying Willie Mays for fifth on the all-time home runs list.

The two-run homer off Colorado’s Carlos Estévez in the eight inning put the Angels ahead for good.

“For it to be the game winner on top of all that, it was kind of like a perfect moment for him. And for us. We’re still not out of this thing, mathematically, and to get a big knock like that, it could help get our spirits (up) for the next couple days.”

Angels manager Joe Maddon said after the game.

Highlights: Angels 5, Rockies 3

Extra bases

  • Colorado’s Nolan Arenado didn’t play Sunday as he continues to deal with soreness in his left shoulder.
“It’s something that I’ve had for some time, and I’ve tried to play through it,” Arenado said before the game. “It’s flared up sometimes, then gone down. It’s flaring up again. Trainers are helping me through it, but it’s frustrating.”
  • Outfielder Raimel Tapia was replaced by David Dahl in the fifth inning after suffering from dizziness after hitting his head on a diving catch earlier in the game.
  • The Rockies are off today before opening a two-game series against Oakland at Coors Field on Tuesday. Righty Antonio Senzatela (3-2, 3.69 ERA) is scheduled to start the opener for Colorado.

Despite trailing by 19 points in the third quarter the Nuggets rallied on Sunday afternoon in Orlando to beat the Clippers 111-98 and force Game 7 in the Western Conference semifinals.

Center Nikola Jokić led Denver with 34 points, 14 rebounds and six assists. He had this to say after the win:

“Maybe this is going to sound weird or funny, but we don’t care. We’re just going to go there and have fun. Coach said in the meeting before ‘don’t forget to have fun’ and in the third and fourth quarters we were having fun. You could see everybody was laughing feeling good because we were playing good, we were playing amazing, so when we play like that the confidence is very high.”

Top Colorado sportsbook offers for NFL opening weekend

With the NFL season underway, the NBA and NHL playoffs still going and the MLB season winding down the sportsbooks in Colorado have tons of great offers going this weekend. Let’s look at some of the best.

FanDuel

FanDuel continues to offer up great promotions and this weekend is no exception.

Friday they have an NBA risk-free same-game parlay. It works like this, opt-in on the promotions page and then for either the NuggetsClippers or the CelticsRaptors game create a three-leg parlay in which you select the moneyline, over/under and agains the spread bet. If you get all three right great, you make a nice little profit. If not you’ll be refunded up to $10 in site credit.

My advice: Simply make a $10 single-game parlay bet and if you win you’ll make a nice little profit, but if not you literally lose nothing.

On the football side of things FanDuel is offering another Spread the Love contest made popular during the NBA restart. The way it works is simple, for every 5,000 bettors who place a wager on the CowboysRams game they’ll move the line one point in the Rams favor. The max wager is $50, but at the -110 odds that’s still a profit of $45.45. Also, it doesn’t matter when you place your bet, you’ll receive whatever the line gets to by kickoff.

As of Friday afternoon the line was +6 for the Rams, assuming it continues climbing it’ll be a can’t miss come kickoff on Sunday at 6:20 p.m.

My advice: Put the max bet down. The last time FanDuel ran this promo for an NBA game the line ended up over 100 points. I don’t think it will get this high that time, but it should reach a number that pretty much guarantees a win.

DraftKings

Over at DraftKings their biggest promotion centered about Thursday’s Chiefs-Texans game, but they still have plenty of offer this weekend.

If you’re a new customer you can take advantage of their current sign-up offer where you’ll get 100-1 odds on any NFL team to win either Sunday or Monday. The max bet allowed it $1, but still all the means if all you have to do is pick one team to win and you’ll make $100 on your $1 wager. It’s always nice turning a Washington into a Benjamin just like that!

As for existing customers, DraftKings is offering 25% profit boosts on every single Sunday game this weekend. The only stipulations are the max bet for each game is $50 and the max additional winnings are $100 per game.

My advice: If you were planning on placing any NFL bets this weekend just make sure you opt-in and select the 25% single-game profit boost on all your NFL bets. Nothing else changes you just get more money back if you win.

BetMGM

Over at BetMGM there’s a couple great offers to take advantage of and they will cost you exactly zero dollars to do so.

First, is their Pick 3 TD Challenge. Just go to BetMGM’s promotions page and select the player you think will score the first touchdown in the SeahawksFalcons, BuccaneersSaints and CowboysRams games. If you’re right with one pick you’ll get a $5 free bet, two right answer net you a $10 free bet and get all three right and you’ll earn yourself a $100 free bet. It’s free to enter so no reason not to.

The other offer at BetMGM is another can’t miss. Simply log into your account on either Saturday or Sunday before the start of the Sunday Night Football game and you’ll get a free $10 bet. Then use that free bet and hopefully turn it into a whole lot more money!

Rockies swept by Padres, nine-game homestand on tap

The Rockies-Padres series mercifully came to a close for Colorado, as San Diego finished off a three-game sweep with a 5-3 win.

Colorado lost in walk-off fashion Monday (1-0) and got routed Tuesday (14-5) before dropping another close game to finish out the series Wednesday.

The Rockies are off today before starting a nine-game homestand Friday, with a three game series against the Angels. After that Colorado has a short two-game series vs. Oakland and then a four-game set vs. the Dodgers.

The homestand is the last one of the season for Colorado. After the series finale on Sunday, Sept. 20 vs. L.A. the Rockies play four games each vs. the Giants and Diamondbacks on the road to finish the year.

Chances for Rocktober?

Despite sitting at 20-23, the Rockies still have a legitimate chances at making the playoffs this season, assuming they can start winning at home. Colorado is 9-12 at Coors, including going 4-10 over the past 14 games there.

As it stands heading into Thursday’s games, the Rockies (20-23, .465) trail the Giants (23-21, .523) and Marlins (19-19, .500) for one of the final two playoffs berths.

Remember, this season, due to games being canceled over COVID-19 outbreaks, there’s a chance not all teams will play a full 60-game season. In that case winning percentage will determine who gets in.

No fans, no fun for Nolan

The Denver Post’s Patrick Saunders wrote about how Rockies third baseman Nolan Arenado might miss having fans at games more than anyone else.

“It’s nice to have that energy, that little pick me up. Sometimes it’s hard to find, within yourself, when you are going day-to-day. So it’s fun to play in good environments because that gets you going.”

Arenado said before Wednesday’s game.

Dahl returns

One bright spot Wednesday was the return of outfielder David Dahl for Colorado. Dahl had been on the 10-day IL due to lower back soreness and last played in a game on Aug. 17.

He didn’t play Wednesday, but manager Bud Black is hoping Dahl is able to contribute down the stretch for the Rockies.

“It looks as though he’s healthy, he’s ready to go, he’s in a good frame of mind. We’ll try to get him in there as we get to the weekend and as we get to this homestand. But we need David to be ready.”

Black said.

Porter calls out coaches, teammates after Nuggets’ 96-85 loss Wednesday

The Nuggets lost to the Clippers 96-85 in Game 4 of the Western Conference semifinals Wednesday night in Orlando, but it’s what happened after the game that quickly became the bigger story.

Denver rookie Michael Porter Jr. scored 15 points in the first half on 5-for-6 shooting, he finished the game with 15 points on 5-for-8 shooting. After the game he was asked what he needed to do in the second half to get more involved and here was his response:

“I just didn’t touch the ball. They didn’t do anything differently. … That is up to the playcalling, the coaches and whose hands they want to put the ball in. We kept going to (Nikola Jokić) and (Jamal Murray) and they are two amazing players, but I just think to beat them we need to get more players involved. We have to move the ball a little bit better. We can’t be predictable against that team.”

It didn’t stop there though as Porter went on to say he’s going to talk to the coaches about the plan going forward.

“I think if I am going to be out there on the floor playing a lot of minutes, I think I should voice that. I will probably talk to the coaches and tell them what I see being out there on the floor just letting them know, look, they know what we are doing. We have to swing the ball. We have a lot of players that can play basketball and score, so we have to get some more guys involved.”

Porter said.

Portland Trail Blazers guard Damian Lillard voiced his displeasure on Twitter with what Porter said after the game in a series of tweets, including this one, talking about whether Porter’s assessment was correct, just handled poorly:

Clippers stifle Denver offense

As for the actual game, Denver was thoroughly shut down as L.A.’s Kawhi Leonard, Paul George and Patrick Beverley held Murray to 18 points on 6-of-15 shooting, along with seven assists and four turnovers.

Jokić still had a solid game for the Nuggets, finishing with 26 points and 11 rebounds. But it was no match for Leonard who nearly had a triple double with 30 points, 11 boards and nine assists.

Nuggets coach Michael Malone didn’t mince words either after the game, saying:

“We have to be a hell of a lot better on offense. I have to help our guys more. They’re just dogging and hounding Jamal Murray everywhere. It’s been really hard to get him open for quality looks. … We worked so hard for everything we tried to get, and obviously we’re struggling to make shots right now”

Another comeback in store?

The Nuggets once again are trailing 3-1 in a best-of-seven series, but this Clippers team is on a completely different level than that of the Utah Jazz who the Nuggets rallied to beat in seven games.

Obviously anything is possible, but at this point if the Nuggets can manage to eek out a win in Game 5 and force a Game 6 before bowing out of this year’s NBA playoffs that appears to be the most positive outcome remaining.
